One System for the Chemical Operation
Chem/Serv is a family-owned distributor of food-grade and industrial chemicals based in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Founded in 1952, the company supplies Midwest manufacturers and operates its own warehouse and repack operation.
The operation spans chemical distribution, warehousing, packaging, and labeling. Chem/Serv uses Work Orders when glycerin arrives by tank wagon and is repacked into totes, as well as when the team labels pails.

In 2025, Chem/Serv replaced a legacy chemical-distribution ERP and the manual work surrounding it with ShelfCycle. Its story is not about one specific feature. It shows how the pieces of a chemical operation become more useful when they share the same system. Repack work updates inventory. Inventory carries lot documents. Purchasing establishes landed cost. Incoming customer POs become draft sales orders against the same customer and product data.
That connected foundation also gives ShelfCycle room to keep automating the work. Chem/Serv does not wait at the edge of that process. Its team brings real operating cases to ShelfCycle, tests new workflows, and puts the useful ones into production.
At a July 2026 review, Andi's assessment was plain: "I think you guys have a great product."
Inventory Starts on the Warehouse Floor
Chem/Serv uses ShelfCycle Work Orders to record repack activity and the resulting inventory in the same workflow. When bulk glycerin arrives by tank wagon and moves into totes, or the team uses a Work Order for labeled pails, the material consumed and the packages produced stay connected.
That matters because a repack is not just a production step. It changes what the warehouse has on hand and what sales can promise a customer. Recording both sides together gives the rest of the operation a stronger inventory record to work from.
"You've helped my inventory numbers be more consistent than I have seen in 20 years."
At a July 2026 review, Andi reported monthly inventory variance had fallen to about $500, from roughly $10,000. She also said the warehouse was encountering fewer cases where recorded inventory did not match what was actually on hand.
For the warehouse, that means fewer interruptions to investigate a product the system says should be available but the team cannot find.
The Documents Travel With the Product
Chem/Serv stores COAs, kosher and halal certifications, and other product records in ShelfCycle. COAs can stay with the lot, follow the material through an order, and populate the digital file cabinet when a shipment is completed.
That is a material change for a company distributing food-grade chemicals and participating in ACD's Responsible Distribution program. The product, its lot, the transaction, and the documents needed to support it no longer have to live in separate places.
"We used to have a separate computer just for COAs. They're all being put in ShelfCycle now, and it works perfectly."
"I love having everything there," Andi said. "I've put certifications in, kosher, halal, things like that."
Andi calls the operating standard "audit ready." The direction is simple: keep the BOL, COA, certification, and related transaction close enough that the Chem/Serv team can retrieve the record when it is needed.

"I love the new system, because it makes my job so much easier!"
Built From a Real Purchase Order
ShelfCycle's PO cost allocation lets Chem/Serv distribute a freight charge across a purchase order by product, quantity, weight, or material value, then adjust the result. The allocation solves a real operating problem. More important, it shows how a customer can shape the standard product without turning it into custom software.
Chem/Serv sent ShelfCycle one of its complex POs and explained how the team made the tradeoffs. Allocating that cost by hand took Andi 20 to 30 minutes and often required another adjustment. ShelfCycle turned that operating knowledge into four reusable allocation methods. Andi tested them against the same kind of work her team handles every day.
"I think you guys hit the nail on the head on this one."
By the July review, Chem/Serv's operations team was using the workflow on live purchase orders. "We've used it. Trust me, we just used it yesterday," Andi said.
The workflow moved from one customer's operating case into standard production software, while Chem/Serv's team kept pressure-testing it on live POs. That is what a close customer and product loop looks like in practice.
AI Speeds Up Order Entry and Flags Discrepancies
ShelfCycle's Order Entry Agent does more than transcribe a customer PO. It turns the document into a draft sales order, then checks what it extracted against Chem/Serv's customer terms, product and packaging records, saved addresses, pricing, and order history.
Before the order is saved, ShelfCycle can surface payment terms that differ from the customer default, a sales price that does not match the applicable price book, a new ship-to address, an uncertain product variant, or an order type that differs from prior patterns.
Instead of entering every field and cross-checking the PO by hand, Andi starts with a prepared draft, focuses on what needs her judgment, and saves the order with the source PO attached.

"Absolutely brilliant. I use it all the time."
A Better Operating System, Built Together
During its first year, Chem/Serv moved more of its operation onto a common foundation. The warehouse records repack work where inventory changes. Chem/Serv is consolidating product documents. Purchasing uses a workflow shaped from a real PO. Incoming customer POs can begin as draft sales orders.
Each is a practical improvement. Together they show the larger shift: from buying a static list of ERP features to participating in a system that improves with use.
Recognized for operational excellence

Chem/Serv's operating record extends well beyond this software change. The company has participated in Responsible Distribution for more than thirty years. In August 2026, ACD named Chem/Serv one of two recipients of its Responsible Distribution Excellence Award, which recognizes sustained commitment to environmental, health, safety, and security standards.
"I'm really happy. In the first year of being on ShelfCycle, we won the Responsible Distribution Excellence Award!"
Andi described the working relationship in equally direct terms: "That's what I feel. It's a partnership." Asked separately to rate the product partnership, she gave it a 10.
"The product partnership, I've got to give you a 10 because it really has been a good collaboration."
